Client Needs:
Originally built in 1896, the Hadlock Pond Dam in Fort Ann, New York was significantly reconstructed by others in 2005. Shortly after work was complete and upon refilling of the headpond, a portion of the earthen embankment failed, causing the dam to collapse.

Kleinschmidt Solution:
After the failure, Kleinschmidt teamed with the firm of Haley & Aldrich, Inc. to provide the design services for the reconstruction of the dam. Kleinschmidt’s first task was to provide hydrologic and hydraulic analysis necessary to stabilize the site. Once the site was secured, Kleinschmidt assisted Haley & Aldrich in developing the reconstructing design concept including determination of the hydrologic and hydraulic design criteria, and the structural design components of the concrete structures including the spillway, fuse plugs and low level discharge. All design work was incorporated with the geotechnical design prepared by Haley and Aldrich. Services during the construction included hydrologic, hydraulic and engineering design support including construction monitoring. The reconstruction work was successfully completed in 2007.

Client Benefits:
Kleinschmidt’s extensive experience contributed to prompt, safe and functional reconstruction of the facility.
