Kleinschmidt’s control and automation engineers have extensive design experience with unit control systems from simple gate positioners to digital governor control for isochronous generation. Our preferred control system design is a hybrid of hardwired control with PLC based automation, which allows for modern unsupervised unit control but gives the operators the ability to manually control the unit if the automation equipment is out of service. As asset class and project costs are always a consideration, we assist our clients with choosing the best control system design for the project whether it be hardwired, automated, or a hybrid.

Our plant control system design experience includes PLC and RTU based equipment that range from supervisory networks with multiple HMI’s, historian and alarm servers, and remote I/O racks to a single RTU rack that networks to the SCADA system. Integrating a new unit to an existing facility typically includes integration of the new unit control system with the existing plant control system. We work with the client to identify the best hardwired and network interface points as well as necessary bench board and HMI software modifications to make this a smooth transition for the operators, which includes special consideration for HMI screen and bench board layouts to ensure they match the other unit controls.
