Green Stormwater Management
Impervious surfaces, such as roadways and buildings, are characteristic of urbanized landscapes. As land development increases, it leads to replacement of pervious areas with impervious surfaces, causing an increase in stormwater runoff volume and combined sewer overﬂow (CSO) episodes. In turn, this affects watersheds by impairing water quality and degrading stream habitats. Our goal is to protect and enhance watersheds by managing stormwater runoff with innovative green stormwater infrastructure, maximizing economic, social, and environmental benefits.
Improved stormwater management is an important component of many municipalities’ strategic initiatives and many have developed Sustainable Stormwater Management Plans to counter deteriorating ecosystems. Green infrastructure, or source controls, is a set of techniques that detain or retain stormwater runoff through capture and controlled release, infiltration into the ground, vegetative uptake and evapotranspiration thereby reducing the need for end-of-pipe stormwater storage and treatment systems.
Kleinschmidt is currently working on one of the largest private green stormwater projects in the U.S., a 4600-acre residential development in the Pocono Region of northeast Pennsylvania. This project includes developing a comprehensive green stormwater management plan for the entire area that was fully developed over 40 years ago before there were considerations for green stormwater. We are integrating engineering and biological sciences to develop a plan that ensures high quality stormwater runoff that will preserve the community lakes and streams, a highly valued asset of the region.
