Kleinschmidt Cares

Our Commitment to the Communities Where We Work, Live and Play

At Kleinschmidt, we don’t just work in communities—we invest in them. Our core values of Meaningful Work, Integrity, and Loyalty guide everything we do, from serving our clients to uplifting those in need. At the heart of our culture is a commitment to service—an ethos that fuels our long-standing support for socially and economically disadvantaged communities across North America.

In 2010, we put our values into lasting action by establishing the Kleinschmidt Fund, a permanent endowment created to support organizations creating positive change in the world.

Our employees lead our philanthropic efforts through the Philanthropy Committee—a passionate, employee-driven group that ensures our giving reflects the causes we care about most. Team members can nominate organizations, contribute through voluntary paycheck donations, and help direct where the funds go each year.

It’s a collective effort, one more way to empower our people to create a meaningful impact.

Powered by Purpose

At Kleinschmidt, giving back isn’t just about writing checks—it’s about showing up. Our employees are deeply committed to supporting their communities and investing in the future of the water, energy, and environmental fields. From STEM mentorship and public outreach to youth education and technical demonstrations, our team members bring their knowledge and passion directly to the next generation.

Take, for example, Robert Schomp, an engineer in our Portland office, whose volunteer work is helping students see a future in renewable energy and engineering. Through his leadership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Robert guided high school students in hands-on bridge design projects, demystified hydropower at youth STEM fairs, and was a relatable role model during Engineers Week events. Whether sharing insights about college life or showcasing real-world engineering challenges, Robert and many of his Kleinschmidt colleagues are lighting the path for future innovators.

Our people regularly volunteer at local schools, participate in regional STEM programs, and serve as mentors in professional organizations across North America. They bring science to life through storytelling, demos, and real-world examples—making complex topics approachable, exciting, and inclusive.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Kleinschmidt, sustainability isn’t a buzzword—it’s who we are. From our roots in renewable energy to our forward-thinking business practices, we’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint while maximizing positive impact. Our Sustainability Council champions this mission by guiding grassroots efforts across the company, encouraging employees to take the lead in improving how we work, live, and care for the planet. Our mission is simple but powerful: to positively impact the environment and ourselves through our work and actions.

The Council supports local office initiatives while aligning company-wide standards, ensuring that sustainability is embedded in every layer of our operations. Whether it’s reducing single-use plastics, installing LED lighting and occupancy sensors, offering telecommuting and commuter benefits, or composting food scraps, we’re intentionally integrating sustainable choices into daily habits. Our Sustainability Checklist outlines actionable, measurable goals across energy use, water conservation, waste reduction, and employee engagement—empowering individuals and teams alike to make a difference. Employees are encouraged to contribute ideas, participate in office-wide programs, and track impact at home.

As we move forward, we continue to evolve our sustainability practices with transparency and purpose. Through ongoing audits, infrastructure upgrades, and thoughtful policies—from green cleaning products to smart thermostats—we’re working behind the scenes to ensure our company walks the talk. Because at Kleinschmidt, sustainability isn’t just part of our legacy—it’s our future.

Diversity & Inclusion

To create a sustainable future for Kleinschmidt, we recognize the importance of equitable practices and inclusivity. We commit to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and feel a sense of purpose in what they do. Our work matters, and you matter, too.

We embrace the value of diversity in creating a strong community. With that in mind, we will nurture an inclusive culture where everyone feels empowered.

At Kleinschmidt, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are not just ideals—they are essential to meaningful work, stronger teams, and a better future for our industry and communities. Our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Council, founded in 2020, leads this effort by developing initiatives, policies, and programs that support historically underrepresented populations and create opportunities for all employees to thrive. From inclusive hiring practices to employee-led training, mentorship programs, and resource groups, we actively shape a culture where belonging drives innovation.

We extend this commitment beyond our company walls through intentional partnerships with woman-owned, minority-owned, veteran-owned, and other small and disadvantaged businesses. Through philanthropic outreach, mentorship, and STEM programs, our employees also engage directly with the next generation of engineers and energy professionals, helping to bridge opportunity gaps and inspire diverse talent to join the industry. Signature programs like the Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program (chaired by a Kleinschmidt employee) and our support of Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) help foster inclusive leadership networks across North America. And with over 55% of our workforce identifying as female—well above industry averages—we’re proving that representation and support matter.

DEI isn’t a checkbox—it’s a continual commitment to listening, learning, and leading with purpose.
