Empowering Sustainable Energy: A Collaborative Triumph

Client

Salt River Project/Bureau of Reclamation

Project Location

Horse Mesa Dam, Maricopa County, AZ

Timeframe

2017-2019

In the heart of Maricopa County, Arizona, the Salt River Project (SRP) operates a hydropower facility at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Horse Mesa Dam. Constructed in 1927, this historical infrastructure, towering with a 300-foot tall concrete thin arch dam, is an essential energy source, generating a significant 129 megawatts (MW) of power through its original and additional units. Despite its critical role, the facility faced a major challenge: the original 84-inch turbine shutoff valves (TSVs), integral to the plant’s operation, were aging beyond their intended lifecycle, jeopardizing the facility’s reliability and safety.

Kleinschmidt partnered with the Salt River Project (SRP) to modernize their historic hydropower facility. Emphasizing a client-centered approach, we provided comprehensive engineering services to replace the facility’s outdated turbine shutoff valves (TSVs), enhancing operational reliability and efficiency.

Beginning with a detailed site analysis, we utilized advanced 3D scanning to understand the spatial constraints within the powerhouse. This critical information guided our strategy for the selective demolition necessary to improve access for valve replacement.

Enhanced Operational Reliability: Modernizing critical components to ensure uninterrupted power generation.

Safety and Environmental Integrity: Achieving a project with zero recordable injuries and environmental incidents.

Collaborative Excellence: Strengthened by routine, detailed communication and collaboration, resulting in trust and a high-performing team.

Innovative Solutions: Overcoming spatial and technical challenges with customized engineering solutions.

24/7 Responsive Support: Ensuring project continuity and reducing potential downtime through dedicated on-call support.

Operational Efficiency

This project showcases Kleinschmidt’s steadfast commitment to empowering our clients with cutting-edge engineering solutions that boost operational efficiency and promote sustainability in energy production. In collaboration with SRP, we achieved hydropower facility modernization, securing enhanced reliability and safety for the future.

Efficient Site Analysis:

Rigorous Testing for Integrity:

To address gaps in historical data, we implemented a thorough testing plan, including non-destructive scanning and concrete coring. This was essential for verifying the structural integrity and compatibility of the larger valves within the powerhouse’s unique environment.

Customized Installation Strategy:

Acknowledging the logistical challenges, we created an innovative structural loading dock platform to facilitate the safe removal and installation of valves. This solution optimized the use of space and minimized disruption.

Proactive Design and Constructibility:

In collaboration with SRP and the construction team, Kleinschmidt prioritized the project’s constructability from the outset. This focus ensured that the integration of new valves with the existing equipment was both safe and seamless, reinforcing the facility’s capacity for sustainable energy generation.
